ReplyDeleteI'm trying to get my friend more into Edwards. He is black and is reluctant to read the works of a man who owned slaves. Or, as my friend puts it, "How can a man be considered Godly when they neglect the most basic of commandments, loving others." I was wondering if you had anything I could say to that or if you have the history about Edwards' owning slaves, like maybe he was nice to his slaves or something. Thanks.
ReplyDeletestephen,
ReplyDeletethat's a very good question, and bravo for trying to get others to read Edwards.
Sherard Burns, an african-american pastor, addresses this very subject in his chapter, "Trusting the Theology of a Slave Owner" in the edited volume, A God Entranced Vision of All Things: The Legacy of Jonathan Edwards.
definitely check that out and go through it with your friend.
